Hi Jess, I hope you read this comment eventhough the vid is about a year old, how do you calculate the Phos. levels for these foods? See you mentioned the .3 – .6% and the numbers on the food charts are mg/100Kcal. Given that each food has different contents, if a company only provides the mg/100Kcal, how do you come up with the percentages? I assume from this video that you consider anything below 200mg/Kcal safe but then, this cannot be necessarily true about every food right?
I appreciate if you could help with this because the more blogs I read the more confused I get and, I come back and watch this video every time I want to check a food’s nutrition but I cannot come to a meaningful conclusion that helps me when I am at a store.
    Thanks!

Thanks for doing all the hard work for us. Still on the hunt for good wet food for my CKD cat, that my cat will actually eat. She is addicted to kibble.

OMG YES! I struggled doing a lot of "research" myself for my cat when I learned how crappy the prescribed foods are. Can’t wait for this one! THANK YOU!

Is phosphoric acid safe for cats with ckd?

I may have missed the healthiest wet pate cat food for cats with kidney issues. Which would mean not so high protein, the protein can mess up the kidney I’m having this issue currently. my last vet clinic did not tell me about my cat’s elevated kidney levels 7 months ago. I’m only learning this now. i was giving her high protein for her diabetes that’s now in remission. she developed it while i was giving her a steroid medication for her Asthma. everything affects other parts of the body. It’s really hard to keep up with everything. Thank you for sharing. your cat is beautiful. <3

Its a joke and just a money making trade. I have been trying to contact Dine to find out how much Phosphprus is in DINE Fresh And Fine In Gravy Chicken And Turkey Wet Cat Food Pouches, they keepoffering me vouchers.

Would these food suggestions work for a cat that had urinary crystals? My vet prescribed prescription urinary food from purina and I don’t like the ingredients and it’s made my cat gain weight. Is phosphorus the thing to look out for or magnesium as well? I can’t afford raw because I have two cats and want to feed them the same thing but want a good wet food that will be better for my males urinary tract

How about using spring water in a glass bottle???
Afraid to use the fountains due to the to plastic encasing, even when trying to avoid it, by buying a stainless steel or ceramic fountain. I am worried that it might end up being worse than regular tap water being changed twice daily with clean ceramic water bowls twice for each leg of the day. Also adding twice daily Orijen Regional Red wet cat food in addition to their Nutro Essential Salon and Wild Rice kibble.

  10. @lisapezzella522 on October 25, 2024 at 4:36 pm

canned or kibble is not the best for any animal. a Raw diet w/probiotics & sups. What I’m looking for a real food diet that’s best…

Thank you Jess for this video! Learning how to feed a cat with CKD is like learning a new language, except with added emotional stress of a diagnosis and the learning feeling urgent. I really appreciate you sharing your knowledge. You are helping so many kitties and the humans trying their best to help their furbabies. Please keep the videos coming! Especially regarding feeding cats with CKD as there are a lot of us out here overwhelmed. Thanks! ❤️

Hello JESS, HOW ARE YOU AND JERICHO? I HOPE FINE. MY CAT IS NOW IN HIS FIRST STAGE OF RENAL FAILURE. DO I HAVE TO PUT MY CAT ON RENAL FOOD.

  14. @nmcraven on October 25, 2024 at 4:50 pm

Consider making your own cat food. I have worked with a veterinarian dietitian at Just Food for Dogs and they will custom formulate a recipe for your CKD cat. Since my cat has been on his homemade food diet, he went from stage 2 to very low stage 1.

I answered and said, "If I have found favor in thy sight, O Lord, show this also to thy servant: whether after death, as soon as every one of us yields up his soul, we shall be kept in rest until those times come when thou wilt renew the creation, or whether we shall be tormented at once?" 76 He answered me and said, "I will show you that also, but do not be associated with those who have shown scorn, nor number yourself among those who are tormented. 77 For you have a treasure of works laid up with the Most High; but it will not be shown to you until the last times.

78 Now, concerning death, the teaching is: When the decisive decree has gone forth from the Most High that a man shall die, as the spirit leaves the body to return again to him who gave it, first of all it adores the glory of the Most High. 79 And if it is one of those who have shown scorn and have not kept the way of the Most High, and who have despised his law, and who have hated those who fear the Most High — 80 such spirits shall not enter into habitations, but shall immediately wander about in torments, ever grieving and sad, in seven ways.

81 The first way, because they have scorned the law of the Most High. 82 The second way, because they cannot now make a good repentance that they may live. 83 The third way, they shall see the reward laid up for those who have trusted the covenants of the Most High. 84 The fourth way, they shall consider the torment laid up for themselves in the last days. 85 The fifth way, they shall see how the habitations of the others are guarded by angels in profound quiet. 86 The sixth way, they shall see how some of them will pass over into torments. 87 The seventh way, which is worse than all the ways that have been mentioned, because they shall utterly waste away in confusion and be consumed with shame, and shall wither with fear at seeing the glory of the Most High before whom they sinned while they were alive, and before whom they are to be judged in the last times.

88 "Now this is the order of those who have kept the ways of the Most High, when they shall be separated from their mortal body. 89 During the time that they lived in it, they laboriously served the Most High, and withstood danger every hour, that they might keep the law of the Lawgiver perfectly. 90 Therefore this is the teaching concerning them: 91 First of all, they shall see with great joy the glory of him who receives them, for they shall have rest in seven orders.

    92 The first order, because they have striven with great effort to overcome the evil thought which was formed with them, that it might not lead them astray from life into death. 93 The second order, because they see the perplexity in which the souls of the unrighteous wander, and the punishment that awaits them. 94 The third order, they see the witness which he who formed them bears concerning them, that while they were alive they kept the law which was given them in trust. 95 The fourth order, they understand the rest which they now enjoy, being gathered into their chambers and guarded by angels in profound quiet, and the glory which awaits them in the last days. 96 The fifth order, they rejoice that they have now escaped what is corruptible, and shall inherit what is to come;

and besides they see the straits and toil from which they have been delivered, and the spacious liberty which they are to receive and enjoy in immortality. 97 The sixth order, when it is shown to them how their face is to shine like the sun, and how they are to be made like the light of the stars, being incorruptible from then on. 98 The seventh order, which is greater than all that have been mentioned, because they shall rejoice with boldness, and shall be confident without confusion, and shall be glad without fear, for they hasten to behold the face of him whom they served in life and from whom they are to receive their reward when glorified.

99 This is the order of the souls of the righteous, as henceforth is announced; and the aforesaid are the ways of torment which those who would not give heed shall suffer hereafter." 100 I answered and said, "Will time therefore be given to the souls, after they have been separated from the bodies, to see what you have described to me?" 101 He said to me, "They shall have freedom for seven days, so that during these seven days they may see the things of which you have been told, and afterwards they shall be gathered in their habitations."

102 I answered and said, "If I have found favor in thy sight, show further to me, thy servant, whether on the day of judgment the righteous will be able to intercede for the unrighteous or to entreat the Most High for them, 103 fathers for sons or sons for parents, brothers for brothers, relatives for their kinsmen, or friends for those who are most dear." 104 He answered me and said, "Since you have found favor in my sight, I will show you this also. The day of judgment is decisive and displays to all the seal of truth. Just as now a father does not send his son, or a son his father, or a master his servant, or a friend his dearest friend, to be ill or sleep or eat or be healed in his stead, 105 so no one shall ever pray for another on that day, neither shall any one lay a burden on another; for then every one shall bear his own righteousness and unrighteousness." 2 Esdras 7:75

Thank you! My cat is "sassy" as his vets call him, so going to go buy a few singles of the wet food and see what he likes! In his life, he has eaten 2 kibbles, one wet food, and one treat brand. Nothing else has ever entered his mouth, not even raw or cooked meat, which he has been offered.

meat is so contaminated right now. pigs are literally fed plastic. i don’t know what is what. this pandemic has brought out the worst in our capitalistic system. especially for our pets who can’t speak for themselves. 😞

Hi Jess! Thank you for posting such informative content. Your videos and others helped me start a journey to feed my cats better! My two cats both eat Ziwi Peak Air Dried Food (I transitioned them slowly from Blue kibble) and I have two questions I’d love your take on:

    1. Is it ok to give them a variety of proteins in the same day (i.e. chicken breakfast and lamb dinner)? This is probably a silly question, but I’ve read that cats have sensitive stomachs so I’m not trying to overdo it

    2. I realize Air Dried Food is still dry food, but I’m wondering whether the fact that I drown the pieces in water everytime I serve it to them negates the lack of moisture? Or is that still not enough? (One of my cats has refused 5 different types of wet foods so far so I’m not sure I can do better or if I even need to)

  20. @reginamarchionni3300 on October 25, 2024 at 5:04 pm

I just stopped feeding dry food about 3 weeks ago. It’s been hard for a couple of the cats. To help out I am using another dry food as treats since it’s probably much better than dry treats just to help with the transition. On our last bloodwork which we try to do every year the two over weight ones had the start of elevated kidney levels. Hope we can reverse that on the next test.

2:26 sweet potatoes are bad for cats, it’s extremely high in oxalic acid, and will cause kidney stones

My girl gets the steak frites and the wellness morsels mixed in with her Purina NF Rx food because they taste better than the Rx, per usual. Lol

So which or what do you recommend for a cat with kidney disease

  24. @betha8761 on October 25, 2024 at 5:10 pm

Thank you so much for this. It’s so confusing. You just gave us all a huge amount of important information. I’m choosing low phosphorus for my elderly Calico with newly developed beginnings of kidney issues, instead of prescription foods. I will also check out homemade foods, not sure she would go for it but I can try. Thank you so much for doing the work! You are Appreciated!

In my opinion, the content provided by people like Jess on YouTube is better than that provided by 95% of vets. The vets just "happen" to stock and sell bags and bags of dry food. Why? Because they "care" about the wellbeing of your cat. Of course, we should not confuse this "care" with the fact that they make money from it. We should also not forget that this dry kibble is made by the same companies that own the veterinary practice. Oh, and while we are on the topic let’s not forget that the same holding companies fund the "research" oh, and just by the way the same companies also provide "education and training" for vets. Ultimately these "vets" care more about serving their masters (Big Pharma and Big Business) than your cat. That is the absolute truth. Be grateful for people like Jess who publish with honesty and integrity and who really care for the well-being of your cats.
