Cats can suffer from anxiety disorders even as people and dogs can. they’ll experience generalized anxiety disorders or more specific anxiety issues caused by things like mad or separation distress when their pet parents don’t seem to be reception. the primary step to relieving your cat’s anxiety is to speak to your vet, then you’ll discuss the necessity for cat anxiety medications. Here’s an inventory of the various forms of cat anxiety medications and the way they work.

What are you able to do to assist your cat? First, your cat has to be examined by your veterinarian to create sure there are not any underlying medical problems. Your veterinarian can visit you some medication options or seek advice from you an expert within the field—a board-certified veterinary behaviorist. irrespective of the direction you’re taking, the utilization of anti-anxiety medication is simply one a part of the treatment plan. the opposite part involves management and behavior therapy.

Some cat anxiety medications are long-term maintenance medications, meaning they will take 4-6 weeks to require full effect. They are also meant to be taken daily. If the medication helps, the cat should be kept on that for a minimum of 2-3 months. Once your cat’s behavior is stable, they will be gradually weaned off the medication. Some cats like staying on anti-anxiety medications for 6-12 months or longer periods. These cats should get a yearly examination, bloodwork, and behavior reevaluation to make sure that they’re still on the simplest treatment plan for his or her needs.

Other anti-anxiety medications are short-term; they become in a very shorter period of your time and only last for several hours. they’re intended to be used for sure situations where your cat experiences increased levels of tension and stress.

Don’t give them meds with benzo. These are extremely bad. Give others talked about in bwgining that takes weeks to start acting

Giving animals drugs for anxiety is abuse and should be illegal! Let the animal leave

This was good information. But I think anxiety meds are probably not the solution for my anxious, spayed female cat. I also have a larger male, recently neutered. He’s a sweet cat with humans, but he bullies the female, treating her aggressively several times a day, he often will try to block her from using the litter box, which is very large one. Maybe he thinks it’s a game. I don’t know if he has a mean streak or if he still has some residual male hormones in his system. I got another large litter box to set up. I hope he at least will let her use it. My house is not large enough to be able to separate the cats all the time. I love them both and they like my son and I, too. I could just weep.

A few weeks ago, my otherwise healthy 2 and half year old male cat started pulling out his fur. We took him to two vets. (I’ve had him since he was 2-months)

The first vet didn’t do any skin or blood work and just chalked it up to an allergy to fleas. Of which neither my cat or dog has. They gave him a shot of steroids, a round of antibiotics, and flea medication, none of which did a damn thing. Except cost 220 dollars.

So we took him to a second vet and basically pushed them to do what the first vet should’ve done. The test came back negative so the vet chalked it up to anxiety, boredom, etc. That vet prescribed my cat a liquid form of anxiety medicine and it worked. Neko stopped pulling out his fur almost entirely. He still had his moments but he was doing better. This visit cost us over 100 dollars.

Unfortunately the medication cost 108 dollars a month. Wow.

So my mom found out that we could get the liquid form for cheaper and for some reason decided to tell the vet that. The next day the vet called and was like "Well, we’re gonna switch Neko to the capsules." (Which are like 9 dollars a month and a generic brand) Their excuse was, "Oh the liquid form can be harmful to his liver and kidneys." Which is funny because they gave us 10 refills of this liquid form.

So you’re telling me that it was okay to give my cat something that could be potentially harmful to him when you thought you were getting 108 dollars, but now that you aren’t getting that money you say it’s harmful? 🤔Bullshit! And we looked up the medication and asked the pharmacy and both said it was perfectly fine for cats as long as it was the right dose.

So when we went to the pharmacy the pharmacist said that we couldn’t switch it. They said that the vet told them that we preferred the capsules, which was a full out lie. I specifically told the vet I did not want the capsules. So we’re basically forced to give him the capsules because we can’t get a prescription for the liquid form, and the capsules aren’t working. A few days after giving him the capsules he started pulling out his fur regularly again. So now he’s back to wearing the cone but he can somewhat reach his tail. As soon as I get some more extra money I wanna buy him some enrichment items to help. He likes to be with me a lot so when he can’t sleep on my lap with the heater on I think it makes him anxious.

My cat has always been healthy and has such a beautiful coat. His coat was the reason I even got him. He stuck out. He’s a standard domestic short hair with Tabby white fur so he’s all white with these really pretty brindle spots. And the whole time he was on the liquid form his first started to grow back and I don’t want him pulling it out again. It stresses me out!
